About the Book
Told through the emotional story of an on-going walk with her own autistic son, Autism's Hidden Blessings explores some of God's specific and powerful promises for parents of children with autism, encouraging them to see that life with these precious children is not a burden or struggle, but a gift full of adventure, hope, opportunity and daily miracles when we trust in God.
This book gets down in the pit with parents of children with autism who are weary in the battle to care for their child. Langston shares insight into promises that enable parents to fly above difficult circumstances to find the unique beauty and potential in every child, and to a life full of joy in midst of hardships.
This is the story of God reaching down into the darkness of our lowest moment and pulling us back into the light of His love to soar again.
When Autism Hits
In 1990, the incidence of autism was 1 in 10,000. Today, according to a recent report from the CDC, it is 1 in 91. The extremely limited resources available to such an influx of cases coupled with the high financial cost of care (not to mention a increasing percentage of families without health care coverage at all) leave many parents without hope. Escalating the despondency is the fact that the rate of divorce in marriages increases to 80% when there is a child in the family with a disability.
A diagnosis in itself often turns a family's world upside-down. In an instant, parents say goodbye to the hopes and dreams they have held for not only their children's lives, but their own. Suddenly, they find a new reality of doctors, therapists, confusing educational issues and of course, mounting health care bills. It's easy to feel crushed by the weight of it all.
This book offers God-based encouragement desperately needed on the autism front. Autism is a hot topic today, with front-page coverage on Newsweek and major network coverage, but nearly all of the reporting focuses on the extreme hardships families face when a child is diagnosed. The consistency of this sad message, although helpful in terms of raising funds, can be extremely discouraging to parents. In short, there is a severe shortage of optimistic coverage.
The bottom line is that parents are desperate for hope. The good news is that Scripture provides hope, and in an extraordinary and powerful way.
